Western Region PDC
The long-awaited ASSK Product Development Competition (PDC) – Western Region is officially happening on 27th November 2026 at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST).
The countdown has begun, and it is time to move from ideas to action. Under the theme “The Actuarial Ecosystem: Students, Innovation and Industry in Convergence,” the Western Region PDC will bring together actuarial students from universities across the region, including Kabarak University, Moi University, Egerton University, Tom Mboya University and Maseno University, among others.
This is more than a competition. It is a platform to challenge conventional thinking, apply actuarial knowledge, showcase innovation, present meaningful research and connect academic thinking with industry needs.Whether you are developing an innovative product or preparing a research paper that could improve an existing business, product, or industry practice, this is your opportunity to bring your work forward.
Do not wait until presentation day to start preparing. Use this time to strengthen your product or research paper, challenge your assumptions and build a compelling case for your solution.
Here is what you should be working on:
- Identify a real-world problem. Find a meaningful challenge that needs a better solution.
- Validate the problem. Establish that the problem exists, understand who it affects and demonstrate why it matters.
- Define a focused solution. Clearly explain what you are proposing and how it addresses the identified challenge.
- Evaluate existing alternatives. Research what is already available, identify the gaps and demonstrate what makes your approach different.
- Demonstrate actuarial value. Apply actuarial thinking through risk analysis, modelling, data, financial assessment, pricing, forecasting, or other relevant techniques.
- Establish viability. Examine the technical, operational, financial and practical feasibility of your proposed solution.
- Test your assumptions. Support your arguments with evidence, data, research, and appropriate analysis.
- Address risks and limitations. Identify potential challenges and explain how they can be managed.
- Prepare a compelling presentation. Organise your findings, communicate your value proposition and make your case clear.
- Rehearse your defence. Be ready to explain your decisions, justify your methodology, respond to questions and defend your work with confidence.
Remember, a promising idea is only the beginning. The strength of your work lies in how well you investigate the problem, develop your solution, demonstrate its value and communicate its potential. On 27th November, JOOUST becomes the meeting point for student innovation, actuarial research and industry-focused thinking across the Western Region.
Bring your ideas. Present your research. Challenge perspectives. Connect with fellow innovators and take your place in the evolving actuarial ecosystem.
